They already have 85% of the community on side, and despite no successful legislation state parliaments continue to introduce bills and the issue is continually before the eyes of politicians, forcing them to speak publicly. Perron also points out that members of all parties have sponsored bills, and compares the issue with abortion, that where no one once would talk about it now every party in the country has a policy on it. Perron finishes by discussing a range of methods to inform and persuade politicians and the broader community on the issue.BackgroundThe Northern Territory was the first jurisdiction in the world to explicitly legalise euthanasia. The Rights of the Terminally Ill Act 1995 (NT) entered into law on 1 July 1996. The following year the Commonwealth Parliament intervened to overturn the Act. Section 50A was added to the Northern Territory (Self-Government) Act 1978 to prohibit the Northern Territory from making laws in respect of euthanasia.
