The play addresses the issue of suicide by someone with a terminal illness and the support to do so of those who love them. Perron states that it happens far more often than people think but that most commit suicide alone and by violent means. Perron characterises the Australian Christian Lobby position as that with good palliative and spiritual care the desire to die will vanish and points out that even Palliative Care Australia do not support this view. Perron then addresses the issue of death by the withdrawal of medical treatment, which has less safeguards than voluntary euthanasia, and that voluntary euthanasia allows people to die with dignity and in line with their desire for autonomy.BackgroundThe Northern Territory was the first jurisdiction in the world to explicitly legalise euthanasia. The Rights of the Terminally Ill Act 1995 (NT) entered into law on 1 July 1996. The following year the Commonwealth Parliament intervened to overturn the Act. Section 50A was added to the Northern Territory (Self-Government) Act 1978 to prohibit the Northern Territory from making laws in respect of euthanasia.
