He then contrasts this with the thousands of elderly Australians who have committed suicide since, but unlike Nancy with neither dignity or ihe company of family and friends, and usually by violent methods. Perron then accuses politicians of ignorance on the reality of suicide and urges proponents of voluntary euthanasia to 'crank up the pressure' on them and suggests one reason for the lack of successful legislation is the political view that support for euthanasia will not lead to an increase in votes, but rather offending the religious vote will lead to a loss of votes. BackgroundThe Northern Territory was the first jurisdiction in the world to explicitly legalise euthanasia. The Rights of the Terminally Ill Act 1995 (NT) entered into law on 1 July 1996. The following year the Commonwealth Parliament intervened to overturn the Act. Section 50A was added to the Northern Territory (Self-Government) Act 1978 to prohibit the Northern Territory from making laws in respect of euthanasia.
