Sandy Nairn was the wife of Mal Nairn who was the first Vice Chancellor of the Northern Territory University. The University was created when the Darwin Institute of Technology merged with the Northern Territory University College. The University commenced on 1st January 1989. Professor Mal Nairn arrived in Darwin from Murdock University early in 1989 bringing with him his wife Sandy.
Sandy became very active in the community. She participated in the Mental Health Association program called Open Door. This group raised funds to furnish and equip homes where mental health patients resided after treatment. Sandy was very active with the Council for the Ageing. She spent many hours sitting with the elderly to relieve family members. She was very active in the Cancer Council.
Tragically she lost her battle with Cancer and died in the early nineties.
