Conditions of Use
You may save and/or print photographs from these collections for individual research and study purposes in accordance with the Copyright Act 1968. If you wish to use the work for any other purposes, eg use in a publication, or for commercial purposes, then you must seek permission from CDU Library. Please contact us.
Copyright applies to works that are still within the period of copyright protection. Material that is out of copyright is said to be in the 'public domain' and may be used freely.
Copyright law is complex and constantly evolving. The information on this website is provided as guidance only and does not constitute expert or legal advice. If in doubt, always assume that a work is in copyright and seek legal advice before reproducing it.
Pre-1955 Photographs - Photographs available via this platform, taken before 1 January 1955 are free of known copyright restrictions and are made available for use under the Creative Commons Public Domain Mark. Permission is not required for use and this includes publishing, on condition that you:
- Acknowledge the CDU Library when using this material for any purpose in the following way: CDU Library - Collection and Library's unique identifying number e.g. CDU Library, Shewring Collection, CDU:1234;
- Where known, cite the photographer;
- Meet any additional conditions of use that might be imposed by donors;
- Note that when you are re-publishing a photograph it does not create a new copyright.
Post-1955 Photographs - Photographs available via this platform, taken after 1 January 1955 are copyrighted for the life of the photographer or owner plus 70 years. Permission must be sought before use. Please contact the CDU Library if you require a copy of a photograph dated post-January 1955.
