Alternative NameAsian Studies Council (ASC)Description
The Asian Studies Association of Australia (ASAA) is a registered charity and the peak body of Australian scholars and educators on Asia.
Established in 1976, ASAA "promotes and supports the study of Asia in Australian universities and knowledge of Asia among the broader community. Our membership is drawn mainly from academics and students, but also includes industry and government Asia experts."
The ASAA publishes a quarterly journal, Asian Studies Review.
"The Asian Studies Council was announced in May 1986 [...] the Council has been working on a national strategy for Asian Studies which will have four trusts: national language policy directions, the integration of Asian studies across the primary and secondary school curriculum so that these will be an inescapable part of every Australian child's education; the special efforts needed in both language and Asian studies for the trading, commerce and tourist sector and, finally, the need to raise awareness of these issues and to address the problem of demand for Asian studies in the economy."
