SAVES, also known as the Living Will Society, was a non-profit organisation formed in Durban, South Africa in 1974. SAVES assisted more than 50,000 South Africans to sign and lodge documents informing family and healthcare professionals of their end-of-life wishes, including 'ask[ing] a doctor to prioritise comfort in your final hours by administering pain-relieving medication, even if this hastens the moment of your death.'
The acronym SAVES represents factors the Living Will Society believes a living will 'saves';
Suffering and pain;
Anxiety for loved ones;
Valueless prolongation of terminal illness;
Existence without quality of life; and
Spending life savings unnecessarily.
In 2016, the World Federation of Right to Die Societies declared SAVES no longer existed after 'attempts to contact anyone at the Society failed.'
