Alternative NameVoluntary Euthanasia Society of New ZealandDescription
The End Of Life Choice Society of New Zealand (formerly the Voluntary Euthanasia Society of New Zealand) is one of two main organisations lobbying for euthanasia in New Zealand, with the other being the national wing of Exit International.
Euthanasia is now legal in New Zealand. The End of Life Choice Bill passed in Parliament 69–51 in November 2019, followed by a referendum held alongside the 2020 general election. The legislation took effect one year after the official declaration of the successful referendum result, on 7 November 2021.
The Society has now pivoted to:
Work with the Ministry of Health via their Assisted Dying Service;
Provide information to terminally ill people who are uncertain about accessing the application system; and
Support other jurisdictions that are currently attempting to get Medically Assisted Dying legislation passed.
