Campbell Newman
Campbell Kevin Thomas Newman (12 August 1963—) is a former Australian politician who served as both the Lord Mayor of Brisbane (2004-2011) and the 38th Premier of Queensland (26 March 2012 - 14 February 2015).
Newman was born in Canberra and raised in Tasmania. His parents, Kevin and Jocelyn Newman, later both represented Tasmania in the federal parliament. After attending Launceton Church Grammar School, Newman returned to Canberra. He joined the Australian Army in 1981, graduating as a lieutenant in 1985. He spent 13 years in the army, resigning in 1993 with the rank of major; he also has an honours degree in civil engineering from the University of New South Wales and an MBA from the University of Queensland.
In 2004, Newman was elected Lord Mayor of Brisbane as a member of the Liberal Party; he served until 2011. On 2 April 2011, he was elected leader of the Liberal National Party of Queensland, and was successful in the 2012 elections; he served as Premier of Queensland until a hung parliament after the 2015 election forced his resignation. He was replaced as LNP leader and Premier by Annastacia Palaszczuk.
Newman spoke at Parliament House at the launch of a book about the right to die. He said it was important for people to “take a stand” and reveal whether they supported voluntary euthanasia (Lynch, 2021).
Newman lives in Brisbane with his wife Lisa. They have two daughters, Rebecca and Sarah.
