Jeffrey Gibb Kennett (2 March 1948—) is a former Australian politician who was the 43rd Premier of Victoria between 1992 and 1999. Kennett is currently a media commentator. He is the founding Chairman of beyondblue, a national organisation "working to reduce the impact of depression and anxiety in the community."
Born in Melbourne, Victoria, Kennett attended Scotch College. He was an 'unexceptional' student; after attending Australian National University for a year, Kennett worked in advertising before being conscripted into the Australian Army. He served in Malaysia and Singapore from 1968-1970.
After reentering civilian life, Kennett established his own advertising company, KNF. In 1976 Kennett was elected as a Liberal Member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly for Burwood, and in 1982 was promoted to Leader (and therefore Leader of the Opposition); he led a Liberal-National coalition to successive victories in 1992 and 1996 before a shock loss in 1999.
Kennett is a supporter of euthanasia for the terminally ill "under controlled circumstances." ("Kennett: Nitschke has damaged the cause," 2014).
