On November 11 , 1990, thirty-six solar cars left Darwin, Australia with the destination of Adelaide, 3007 kilometers (1868 miles) away. On November 16, the "Spirit of Biel II" from Switzerland crossed the finish line to capture first place honors. Within the next five days, eighteen other cars completed the journey.
