Excess deaths from COVID-19 for Northern Territory: Implications for population projections

In compiling population projections, demographers must make assumptions about future trends in births, deaths, and migration. The global COVID-19 pandemic was of such magnitude that it significantly impacted death rates and therefore life expectancies over multiple years, leading to a substantial number of ‘excess’ deaths worldwide. Excess deaths (or excess mortality) refer to the additional number of deaths during a crisis or event that exceeds the level expected under normal or baseline conditions over the same period.
